Spring on the prairie begins with decisions, and this year’s Manitoba prairie backdrop at Down Home Farm is on the horizon.
This season feels especially meaningful to us.
Not only because this is our first season welcoming guests, but because it begins on the very land where our story started thirty-three years ago— almost to the day.
What grows on this land changes from year to year, shaped by crop rotation, timing, markets, moisture, and whatever Mother Nature decides to hand us.
Each season gives the land a different story to tell.
Over time, these acres have carried wheat, canola, oats, barley, corn, sunflowers, and soybeans — each one changing the look, feel, and rhythm of the landscape in its own way.
This year, Bryan knows it will be wheat or canola. Even with planting getting close, weather, timing, moisture levels, markets, and what the season brings are still shaping the final call. Either way, something beautiful is on the horizon. 🌾 🌼
Manitoba prairie cropland has always been part of my story.
From my father’s fields to the life I built with Bryan, wide open spaces and changing crops have been woven through the years— shaping the rhythm of life around me.
Seasons never stand still here.
Dark earth gives way to fresh green. Green rises into height and movement. Summer deepens everything. Then comes bloom, ripening grain, harvest, stubble, tillage, and rest.
Even when life feels repetitive, the land quietly reminds you that seasons are always changing.
And our story here continues to change with them— now shared through unique Stays, photo Captures, and memories others will soon make here too.
If the Season Brings Canola 🌼
Manitoba canola has a vibrant presence in summer. It arrives in bold yellow bloom — bright, joyful, and impossible to ignore. It brings colour, energy, warmth, natural radiance, and a sense of celebration to photography captures.
Fields of bloom, usually arriving in July and sometimes lingering into August, have a way of turning ordinary evenings into something memorable. They feel celebratory. Full of life. Full of summer. The kind of beauty that makes people slow down on country roads and wish they could pull over.
Out here, there is no need to wonder if you are allowed to stop, or step beyond the shoulder unsure where private land begins.
There is space to arrive intentionally, take it all in, and capture the moment fully.
If the Season Brings Wheat 🌾
Manitoba wheat carries timeless beauty through the season. It shifts from fresh green to golden grain — graceful in the wind and beautiful in changing light. It creates photographs that feel calm, natural, and deeply rooted here.
In July, green heads begin to form, adding texture, movement, and a softer kind of summer beauty to the field. By August, it ripens fully, glowing in evening light and carrying the familiar warmth of harvest season— where golden hour feels at home.
There is something about wheat that feels steady and familiar. Warmth. Simplicity. The kind of beauty that does not need to announce itself.
It is the kind of backdrop that feels honest, enduring, and deeply Manitoba.
Why This Season Means So Much to Us
Thirty-three years ago, Bryan brought me to this property for the first time.
I could never have known then how much of life would unfold — and how this place would remain quietly woven through it, season after season.
We built a family, worked hard, carried responsibilities, weathered seasons of our own, and kept moving the way farm life so often requires.
When I recently went looking for old photos, I realized I could only find six of Bryan and me taken on our grainland over all those years.
Six (yes, only 6)
A humbling but meaningful reminder of just how quickly life moves when you are busy living it, one season at a time.
For all the years this place has been part of our lives, we somehow never made time to have professional photographs taken here ourselves — unless our small collection of grain-field selfies counts. 😉
This season, we’re finally making room for it.
We have booked a local photographer whose work feels nothing short of exceptional to me — soulful, artful, and alive with genuine connection. Tarryn’s eye for light, emotion, movement, and the in-between moments is exactly what drew me in. The kind of imagery that does not feel staged or forced, but honest, effortless, and deeply felt. @the.ateliercreative.co
There is something profound about the thought of being photographed in a place that already knows our history — where seasons worked, memories made, and chapters lived have quietly gathered over time.
That is also what makes this place so rare and unique for others: it is not simply a backdrop to stand in, but a setting that adds depth, feeling, and story to the moments created here.
Wide open spaces. Expansive prairie skies. Privacy. Room to move. No public traffic. No rushed moments. No strangers in the background.
Whether someone is planning engagement photos, family photos, portraits, branding, or simply wants images that feel honest and open-air, setting matters.
The photographs in our portfolio reflect real moments already lived here — shaped by the land, the light, and the people who chose to mark something meaningful on this property. A growing handful for now, with more to come as seasons continue to unfold.
And for those who want to linger a little longer, this same land is also home to our private prairie stays — tucked beneath the trees in Sweet Caroline, our reimagined vintage Airstream.
This place carries many of our memories — and keeps making room for more, for those it draws here.
